Global Link: Who, What, Where, When, Why, How

Who – You! If you are a mature student in grade 10, 11, or 12 who can commit to participating in an international, intercultural, educational program that includes serious study, time abroad, and follow-up responsibilities.

What – Global Link is a three-part experience:

  1. Before You Go you will take the “Global Leadership” class and participate in country-specific meetings with your group. Prepare to enhance your crosscultural skills.
  2. Being There consists of approximately two weeks spent in-country, a time for making friends, sharing customs and culture, and working on academic projects. Expect to change the way you see yourself and the world.
  3. Bring It Back wraps up the Global Link experience, as you share your experience with the community at home. Commit to enlightening the rest of us.

Where – All Global Link programs are built on relationships that University Prep has forged with overseas communities and schools. We have developed programs in Western Samoa, Colombia, Japan, Germany, France and Hong Kong and are always open to new relationships. Our goal is to eventually offer five programs a year on a rotating basis. For information on this year’s programs, click on “Basic Information Sheet.”

When The Global Link program runs from November to June.  You will begin meeting with your country group in November and will meet approximately twice a month before going overseas. You will also participate in the Global Leadership class during second semester. Overseas dates will vary depending on the country you visit. You will be in-country between ten and fourteen days and will leave approximately the last week of March and return during spring break. You will also engage in various “Bring It Back” activities at University Prep and in the Seattle community upon your return.

Why – According to the school’s mission, every University Prep graduate should be “a citizen of the world,” and the Global Link program will help you achieve that goal.

How – Students are selected one year in advance of their overseas experience. For example, if you would like to participate in Global Link during your sophomore year, you will apply during the spring of your freshman year. The application process includes essay questions, a letter of recommendation, and an interview with the team of Global Link leaders. If you are a new student beginning in September and are interested in applying for Global Link, please stop by Ms. Denton’s office (A235).
